Fay Brunning: Canadian Government is Witholding Evidence of Abuse at Aboriginal Children Schools

Image
Edmund Metatawabin (right) was sent to a remote church-run school for aboriginal children in Canada at the age of five where he, and hundreds of others, say they faced years of abuse and torture. He spent about 10 years at the school, beginning in the 1950s. One morning, he says, he was feeling ill and threw up while eating porridge. He says he was slapped and told to go upstairs. When he felt better - four days later - he went back to the dining hall and was forced to eat his own vomit. "I was given that porridge I got sick on and I had to eat that … And if you don't eat, then you're going to get beat up some more, and you're going to get punished - and if you throw up again you're going to have to eat that too, so what choice do you have?" Metatawabin, 66, says at times he and his classmates were forced to sit in an electric chair - either as punishment or as entertainment for the staff at St Anne's Indian Residential School, which operate...

Al Qaeda Affiliate given 24 hours ultimatum to surrender by Syria Rebels

Image
Rebels fighting in Syria have given rivals from an al-Qaeda affiliate 24 hours to surrender, according to activists in the country. Saturday's ultimatum comes amid days of deadly infighting between the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in two northern provinces, Idlib and Aleppo. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels from an alliance of Islamist groups attacked positions of the fighters from ISIL, killing and capturing dozens of people on Saturday. The ISIL has been blamed for brutal killings in areas under their control, turning many local residents against them and leading to a growing resistence to the al-Qaeda-linked group's grip on several areas of the country.

Ramsey Noah: The day I slept under the bridge

Image
Celebrities have started sharing their   rags to riches   story to inspire people who look up to them. In a new interview with   Sunday Sun , actor Ramsey Noah recalled the years before the fame and money. "Those were the times when things got really bad for my mother and I and we had nothing. It was so bad that we didn’t have a home or shelter to live in. We had to stay in a store, a small store that could take only one mat. My mother and I squeezed ourselves in that mat. We didn’t even have a cup to  drink water  not to talk of a stove to cook. And my mother had to borrow, beg and stuff like that. These were moments when I was young I didn’t realize the gravity of poverty we were in, I couldn’t tell. But it was a good orientation for me. It was moments that I thank God for making me past through, because that has sustained and helped me even as an actor. The ability to deliver all the roles they give me because I have tasted both sides of the coin." Ramsey...

We reliably gathered that the lady, popularly called “Lady P”, a renowned commercial sex worker, was sent out of school for poor academic performance, after failing to pass her JSS 3 exams several times. OUR checks revealed that her stock in trade was to seduce more elderly men into sex romps. Sources said that Ogueshi Nwoye, one of her admirers, was challenged to a sex bout after parting with N5,000, a situation that led both into some rounds of sex, which left the man gasping for breath afterwards. He slumped and was rushed to a nearby hospital by sympathisers, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. Although DSP Charles Muka, the acting police spokesman in the state, said he was yet to get the report and could not ...

The PDP is now minority in the  House of Representatives . In a historic move, 37 members of the House of Representatives on Wednesday announced a long-awaited defection from the ruling Peoples  Democratic Party , PDP, to the All Progressive Congress,  APC , thrusting the APC into the lead as the majority party in a House divided for months by PDP’s internal conflicts. With the move, the APC  leads  the House with 175 members ahead of PDP’s 171. The remaining seats are shared by  Labour Party , Democratic Peoples Party, All Progressive Grand Alliance and Accord Party. It is the first time the PDP, in its 14 years of existence, would lose the majority number in any arm of the  National Assembly . Members of the PDP say the APC could only take charge of the House if its members hit 181, basing their argument on the rule that requires a simple majority to take over leadership. They argue that for a 360-member house, such majority will be above ...
